In a tale called The Turnip by the Grimm Brothers, the vegetable is seen as a symbol of good luck and fortune. Two brothers (one rich and one poor) serve as soldiers but the poor one has to work as a farmer to earn a living. One of his turnips miraculously grows to a gigantic size, which he gifts to the king in return for riches. The king then gives the richer brother the turnip, who orders for his brother to be murdered, but luckily he’s saved by someone singing. Then they throw him into a sack and hang it. The poor brother works a hole in the sack and sees a student, who agrees to change places with him. Anyway, all you need to know is that the turnip represents getting second chances and being nourished – the perfect thing to sport this spring.
